RI Shelter Welcomes 10 Dogs Evacuated From Louisiana Before Ida
The shelter dogs should be available for adoption within about a week.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — A Rhode Island shelter welcomed 10 dogs evacuated from Louisiana before Hurricane Ida hit the region earlier this week. The animals arrived at the Potter League for Animals Tuesday.
The effort was part of a collaboration between the Louisiana SPCA, the ASPCA, Northeast Animal Shelter, MSPCA and the Potter League. The 10 dogs destined for Rhode Island arrived in Massachusetts with 29 other canine evacuees over the weekend. All the dogs were previously in shelters and were evacuated to make room for pets affected by the storm.
"We are always here to help animals in need and are happy that we can play a part in giving some relief to our friends in Louisiana," said Brad Shear, the Potter League's CEO. "The Potter League has been a part of a national network of animal shelters for decades and we all help each other when the need arises."

With the situation in Louisiana "still dire for many," the organization is working to accept more animals in the coming weeks, to reduce the strain on resources in the area, Shear said.
The dogs will spend 10 days in isolation, as is required by state law. Before going up for adoption, they must be spayed or neutered, up to date on required vaccinations and microchipped. They are expected to be ready for adoption within about a week.
