RHODE ISLAND — Rhode Island could see up to half a foot of snow Sunday after record-breaking high temperatures the day before. The National Weather Service doubled the expected snow totals early Sunday morning.

The wintry weather is a big change from Saturday, when the high temperature of 62 degrees broke the previous temperature record set in 1999. After a 30-degree temperature drop, the snow arrived overnight.

Initial forecasts showed a light coating in most parts of the state — about an inch. Early Sunday morning, the NWS raised expected snow totals to three to six inches across much of the state, with the Providence area expected to see the greatest accumulation.
