See When Newport's Newest Therapy/Comfort Dog Bo Will Be Officially Sworn-In

Learn about how Newport police's newest K-9 officer will benefit the city.

NEWPORT, RI — Newport police will officially swear-in K-9 Bo as a police therapy/comfort dog on Wednesday, and the community is invited to attend.

The swear-in ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Newport City Hall.

Bo was donated from Dame Dogs Labradors of Pascoag, and will partner with Community Police Officer Nick St. Lawrence in the Newport Community Policing Unit. Together, they’ll focus on strengthening relationships, providing support and connecting with the residents and visitors of Newport in a compassionate and meaningful way, Lt. Joseph Carroll said.

Local trainer Jess Gaes of Petrichor K9 trained Bo. Carroll said Bo will provide emotional support during challenging times, ease stress in community settings, and bring a calming presence wherever he goes. The job will include outreach events and school visits to sensitive calls for service.

Bo is also expected to receive additional training to be able to sniff out danger at public events by detecting explosives.
