Water Search Canceled In Narragansett Bay: Coast Guard

The Coast Guard said an unmanned but running skiff was spotted in the bay. Hours later, police found the boater safe at home.

NEWPORT, RI —A water search was underway Friday near Newport. The Coast Guard said an unmanned but running skiff was spotted in the bay south of Coggeshall Ledge. The area is popular for fishing.

According to Nicole J. Groll, in the Coast Guard's Boston Public Affairs Office, the search started around 4 p.m. when the authorities were notified. Station Castle Hill in Newport sent a boat out to look for a person in the water. Air Station Cape Cod also sent a helicopter.

The search was a false alarm. Ultimately, the boat owner was located at home. He had not been in danger.
