NORTH PROVIDENCE, RI — Former New England Patriots cornerback and Super Bowl star Malcolm Butler was reportedly arrested earlier this month after North Providence police said he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to police and court records obtained by WPRI 12, the recently retired Butler was arrested on March 16. Police told the news station officers saw a white Mercedes-Benz, driven by Butler, stopped in the westbound lane of Mineral Spring Avenue and blocking traffic.

An officer who spoke with Butler and said he had a strong smell of alcohol in his breath, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes, NBC 1o reported. Police said he also refused to take a chemical test or field sobriety tests.

"Just take me to jail," Butler told police, according to a WPRI 12 report.

Butler was charged with driving under the influence and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

Butler played four seasons with the New England Patriots and three with the Tennessee Titans, and finished his playing career with 406 tackles and 17 interceptions. He is best known for intercepting then Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson near the end of Super Bowl XLIX, essentially clinching the Patriots' fourth championship.
