Woman Cleaning North Providence Home Finds Apparent Hand Grenade: Chief

The Rhode Island Bomb Squad disposed of the apparent grenade, the fire chief said.

NORTH PROVIDENCE, RI — A woman cleaning her North Providence home happened upon an apparent hand grenade, Fire Chief John Horan said.

The woman made the shocking discovery in her Urban Avenue home Monday.

"We responded with the police and subsequently summoned the RI Bomb Squad," Horan said in an email. "Bomb squad members determined there were no explosives in the grenade and disposed of it."

Even though the apparent grenade contained no explosives, calling the fire department was still the right thing to do, Horan said.

"Anyone who comes across something like this should take all precautions, leave the area and notify local authorities," he said. "Treat any and every type of ordinance as active and live and leave the disposal of these to the professionals ."
