• DCYF looks to buy St. Mary's Home for Children at a discount but costly upgrades needed • Rhode Island Current (rhodeislandcurrent.com) — State child welfare officials are pursuing a discounted purchase of the former St. Mary’s Home for Children campus in North Providence to reopen it as a psychiatric residential treatment facility for adolescent girls, though renovations and soil cleanup could cost up to $25 million. Mayor Charles Lombardi sees benefits for needy children but also worries the town is losing a prime opportunity for new housing or tax-generating development on the long-vacant Fruit Hill Avenue site.

The blaze, believed to have started in the basement, destroyed the Mary Street house, though 16 adults and two children escaped safely as investigators continue probing the cause.
