Rhode Island Among Worst Places To Drive In New Ranking; Do You Agree?

RHODE ISLAND — A new analysis of federal data suggests Ocean State drivers are some of the worst in the nation — something you may or may not agree with during your daily commute on Interstate 95 or I-295.

The personal finance website MoneyGeek used data from the Federal Highway Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Census Bureau, FBI, and other sources to rank the states with the best and worst driving experiences. The data was sorted into five categories: congestion, costs (including gas and insurance), infrastructure, safety, and weather.

New Jersey was ranked the worst. Anyone who has driven there can understand why. To be fair, residents there are fighting the worst traffic congestion anywhere and were second only to Rhode Island in lousy infrastructure.

Rhode Island was ranked 10th worst (with 50th, Nebraska, listed as the best state to drive in). The Ocean State was ranked in the middle on cost and congestion — probably due to the northern tier of the state being so close to Massachusetts (19th worst, overall). The state did receive high marks for safety and weather.

Behind New Jersey, rounding out the five worst states for driving are California, West Virginia, Mississippi and Maryland, respectively. The best states to drive in are in the Midwest: Nebraska, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Kansas, respectively.
