Assistant Superintendent Bridget Morisseau said that the threat came in the form of an email at around 8:15 a.m. The email said that a bomb would be set off in the school at 8:30 a.m.
"At this time, working in cooperation with RI State Police and RI State Fire Marshall’s Office, the school building is being checked to ensure the continued safety of students and staff," Morisseau said.
The evacuation has disrupted the schedule for the day and all high school students will be fed lunch at the off-site location, Morisseau said. Students and staff will return to the school once authorities signal everything is clear."
That all-clear came after 10 a.m. and now, one person has been arrested in connection with the threat, Morisseau said.
"We would like to thank the RI State Police, the RI Fire Marshal’s Office, the Smithfield Police Department, and the Smithfield Fire Department for their diligence in bringing this situation to a swift conclusion. We would also like to thank the school department staff and students for their patience and support."
More details will be posted as they become available.
