Smithfield Police: Alleged Speedway Robber In Custody

Police raided a Johnston man's home and arrested the man believed to be responsible for two hold-ups.

SMITHFIELD, RI—A Johnston man is in custody, charged with two robberies at the Speedway gas and convenience store on Putnam Pike. Howard A. Smith, 38, was arrested at his Putnam Pike home on Friday, Smithfield police said. The arrest happened at 3:30 p.m. with help from the Johnston police. Smithfield detectives had obtained a search warrant and an arrest warrant. He is being charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, police said.

The arrest stems from an armed robbery Friday morning at the Speedway at 263 Putnam Pike, Smithfield. Police believes Smith is also responsible for another robbery at the Speedway. That crime allegedly happened on March 17. He is being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions and will be arraigned in district court on Tuesday.
