5 Things: Democratic Town Committee, Exploring and Tennis

Weather: It will be sunny today with a high near 76. It should stay clear into the evening, accoring to the National Weather Service.

1. The Tiverton Democratic Town Committee will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Sakonnet Bay Manor, 1215 Main Road  Tiverton.

2. Join the Junior Explorers! Our most popular program is back for its second summer! Children ages 9 to 12 will investigate wildlife and ecology using real scientific tools and methods! Become a Goosewing Beach Field Scientist as we discover exciting critters, natural mysteries, and more! Meet at the Environmental Center.

Registration by email or phone is highly recommended. 

This is a free event, but there is a parking fee at the town beach.

3. Tennis, everyone!  Moms bring the kids, and you can drill/play while the kids drill on a court nearby.  Wednesday and Friday mornings at the Barrington Middle School now includes 1 hour Kids' Drills for children aged 5 - 12 (concurrently with the adult drill). Wed at 9:30 - 11:30 and Fri 10:30-12:30.  (Venue may change so be sure to register before you come!)

4. Owner’s Edge, LLC will host a free educational workshop entitled “Finding Your Omaha: How to Create Your Business’ Roadmap to Operational Success” as part of the Entrepreneurial Summer Camp series at the Centerville Seminar Center on Wednesday, August 26, 2012 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., 875 Centerville Rd., Warwick, R.I. 

5. On this day in 2005, Hurricane Katrina makes landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, as a Category 4 hurricane on this day in 2005. Despite being only the third most powerful storm of the 2005 hurricane season, Katrina was the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States. After briefly coming ashore in southern Florida on August 25 as a Category 1 hurricane, Katrina gained strength before slamming into the Gulf Coast on Asll as other parts of Louisiana.
