5 Things: Sunsets, Music and Sandywoods

Weather: Today will be sunny with a high in the low-70s. Clear skies are expected to continue through the evening, according to the National Weather Service.

1. Enjoy the sunset on an early fall nature walk with The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island along Goosewing Beach! View migrating birds and experience Goosewing Beach when the crowds go home. Meet us at the far end of the South Shore Beach parking lot at 6 p.m.

2. It's Summer Music Night At Sakonnet Vineyards. Stop by for the final concert of the season with Becky Chace from 6 - 8 p.m. Enjoy a wonderful evening on the lawn with live musci and food available from the Coop Cafe.  Bring a blanket or chair. Each car load costs $10 to enter.

3. Stop by Sandywoods Farm and Agricultural Community today and check out "The Newport Opera House Series" by Dan McManus & New Works by Felicia Cinquera.

4. The Greater Tiverton Community Chorus welcomes all singers to open rehersals. The Greater Tiverton Community Chorus is an un-auditioned
choral group that welcomes singers from communities throughout southeastern
Massachusetts and Rhode Island. 
Rehearsals for the winter season will begin on September 6, 2012 at the
Amicable Church, 3804 Main Road, Tiverton, RI, from 7:00pm -9:30pm, and will
continue weekly through the year’s Christmas Concert performances on December
7-9, 2012 entitled, “Celtic Christmas.”  All are welcome to open rehearsals on
September 6, 13, 20, 2012.

5. On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key pens a poem which is later set to music and in 1931 becomes America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." The poem, originally titled "The Defence of Fort McHenry," was written after Key witnessed theMaryland fort being bombarded by the British during the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the sight of a lone U.S. flag still flying over Fort McHenry at daybreak, as reflected in the now-famous words of the "Star-Spangled Banner": "And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there."
