Cornerstone Adult Day Services Offer Support To Aging Rhode Islanders

There is a local choice for ageing residents to turn to for support, while still maintaining autonomy.

Desperately in need of peace of mind and care during the day for her husband, Lorraine Legacy is glad to have found

While managing her own medical challenges, she was also caring for her husband Al who has dementia. Struggling through an unbelievable series of health crisis, Lorraine was hospitalized five times over the past two years, and needed care for her husband during those times.

“I knew it was the right place for Al,” said Lorraine after bringing Al to the Nancy Brayton Osborn Center, the adult day center operated by Cornerstone. Visiting nurses had directed her to Cornerstone.

Al suffers from expressive aphasia, making it difficult to communicate, but his behavior speaks volumes about how he feelsabout attending Cornerstone.

“Al gets his clothes together, shaves and showers the night before," said Lorraine. "He’s ready for the bus at 8:15 a.m., gives me a kiss and joins his pal Duke on the bus for the ride from Tiverton. A social man, Al loves the activity at Cornerstone.”

Cornerstone offered the flexibility the Legacy’s required. During times of health challenge for Lorraine, Al attends the center five days a week, (as is the case presently). At times when Lorraine feels stronger, he attends two days a week, giving Lorraine time to “catch up on things she doesn’t get when Al is at home.”
