A Tiverton's team attempt at a world record was interrupted Saturday after its unmanned vessel nearly struck an island near Martha's Vineyard.Â
Scout, the autonomous transatlantic robot boat, set sail for Spain Saturday morning from Fogland Beach. Many local residents gathered in Tiverton to wish this unmanned vessel bon voyage on its historic journey.Â
However, the journey was short-lived. Scout's path took it in the direction of Noman’s Island, an uninhabited island just south of Martha Vineyard's Gay Head, reports EastBayRI.com.Â
The team from Tiverton quickly rescued Scout and took it back to the shop. The team hopes to launch again soon.Â
If successful, Scout will be the first, unmanned vessel to cross over water on the Atlantic Ocean.Â
