LETTER: Another Successful Coastal Cleanup in Little Compton

To the Editor:

The Sogkonate Garden Club would like to thank the 75 people who participated in the Little Compton 2012 International Coastal Cleanup on September 15^th.  

The clouds and little bit of rain did not deter us.  An estimated 2,255 pounds of trash were collected from our various beaches and shorelines. Not only did individuals show up to work, but the Sakonnet Point Club, the Sakonnet Yacht Club, and The Nature Conservancy joined the effort.

Non-local volunteers from other RI towns, Salve Regina University, and Vermont also contributed time and energy to this project.

We send a special thanks to Little Compton resident Geoff  Dennis who smashed damaged lobster pots so that they would take up less space in the transfer station metal bin.

Cigarette butts (1,855), plastic beverage bottles (643), and pieces of rope (451), were the most numerous items. Damaged lobster pots contributed many pounds to the total weight.

And thank you to the Little Compton residents who make a year-round effort to walk and clean our beaches.
