Little Compton's Annual Chicken Barbecue Is Saturday

It's that time of year again:  Little Compton's annual chicken barbecue and traditional festivities take place on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. at Veteran's Field.

If the the charcoal grilled, slow-roasted chicken dinner doesn't make your mouth water, there will be plenty of entertainment to tempt you to take part. Past year's have seen a silent auction, book sale, braided rug exhibit and sale, and a Pandora's boxes raffle spring up accross Veteran's Field throughout the day. 

This year the Ocean State Summer Pops orchestra will return for a performance.

There will also be plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied - and all before the much-awaited fireworks display at 9 p.m.

The barbecue, which dates back to 1954, may take a hiatus next year until construction is complete on the new Wilbur & McMahon School, reports East Bay RI.

The entrance to the event is free, but it will cost $15 to eat, according to the barbeque's sponsor, the Little Compton Village Improvement Society. Proceeds go toward maintaining the Brownell House.

According to Town Clerk Carol Wordell, doors will open to the flea market-style shopping grounds at 10 a.m. Art, jewelry, trinkets, or hand-me-downs will be sold all day 

Wilbur & McMahon's eighth grade class will be on hand selling t-shirts to help raise funds for its annual class trip to Washington D.C.

The chicken barbeque will be ready for eating around noon and at 6:30 p.m. the Ocean State Pops will perform in the Commons before the grand finale fireworks display at dusk.
