Tiverton Man Accused Of Stealing 88-Year-Old Woman's Credit Card

The victim, an 88-year-old Newport woman, suspected the theft happened when a caretaker invited guests over to her home.

MIDDLETOWN, RI—Rachon Eugene Landrum, 36, of Tiverton, was booked at the Middletown police station on May 23 at 5:40 p.m. He is accused of misdemeanor Fraudulent use of credit cards. Police allege he used an 88-year-old Newport woman's American Express card without her permission in Middletown.

According to the police narrative, the victim went to the Middletown police station on Jan. 31 to advise officers about several fraudulent purchases made on her credit card. She had been alerted by the company's fraud detection and had filed a complaint with the Newport police. Newport detectives said her card had been charged for several fraudulent purchases in several communities on Jan. 24. In Middletown, two purchases were made at the Shell station a minute apart. One was for $11.34 at 4:35 p.m., and the second was for $30.66 at 4:36 p.m. The manager of the Shell station provided video footage of a suspect with a green Hyundai, but he was not identified until April 23.

Police allege Landrum knew the victim's certified nursing assistant and was giving the CNA rides to work at the victim's Newport home. He was also familiar with the victim's house, police allege.
