Tiverton Police: 'I'm not stealing, I thought it was for sale'

All the following arrest information was supplied solely by the Tiverton Police Department. Arrests do not indicate a conviction.

Westport Man Gets Caught Red-Handed

David Souza, 52, of 92 Union Ave., Westport, MA was arrested on Sept. 24 at 3:28 p.m. and charged with attempted larceny, a misdemeanor. According to reports, Tiverton Police received a report of a male attempting to steal an aluminum fishing boat from a property near Seapowet Bridge. The complainant, whose family owned boat, happened to pull into the area and saw an unknown man trying to hook the boat up to his car. The complainant recorded the license plate number and called police.

The almost-thief was scared off before police arrived on scene, but a Tiverton cruiser caught up to him not too long after. Souza told officers he was simply inspecting the boat because he thought is was for sale, but witnesses at the scene had a different story. They said Souza dragged the hull about 50 feet from where it was stored toward his truck and was pulling it into the pickup bed when his attempts to steal were foiled.

Souza was arraigned and released on $500 bail with surety later that night

Fall River Man Charged with Drunken-Driving

Corey Moniz, 24, of 111 Sprague St., Fall River, was arrested on Sept. 20 at 1:24 p.m. when police saw a car traveling erratically on Main Road near State Avenue. After police stopped Moniz's car, police observed signs of intoxication and administered a field sobriety test to Moniz, which he failed. Police allegedly saw evidence of drug use. Moniz was transported to Newport Hospital to take blood a test. The results are still pending, but Moniz was arraigned that evening by a Justice of the Peace and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Tiverton Man, 21, Charged with Domestic Assault

Ion N. Cambra, 21, of 91 State Ave., Tiverton was arrested on Sept. 21 at 6:11 p.m. after police were called for a report of a domestic assault. Cambra was charged with domestic assault because he allegedly slapped her.  He was released by a Justice of the Peace and released on $1,000 personal recognizance the next morning.

Providence Man Charged with DUI

Robert C. Frank, 39, of 24 Doyle St., Providence, was arrested on Sept. 23 at 1:22 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police stopped Frank's car on Route 24 after allegedly watching it make several roadway violations. Police approached Frank and noted that he showed signs of alcohol intoxication. He submitted to a field sobriety test and a preliminary breath test where he registered a .145. At the station, he refused a chemical breathalyzer test. Frank was held overnight at the station, arraigned the next day in Second Division District Court and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Homeowner Assualts Guest

Susan VanAllen, 51, of 23 Main Road, Tiverton was arrested Sept. 23 at 1:50 a.m. and charged with domestic simple assault.

According to reports police arrived at VanAllen's home just after 1 a.m. VanAllen was attempting to eject an unwanted roommate from her home, but police determined VanAllen had fought with the guest prior to police arrival. The victim had small cuts and bruises all over his face, allegedly VanAllen hit him across the face with a small wooden table.  She was arrested, charged and held overnight. They next day she was arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Vandalism Leads To Drug Possession Charge

Sean C. Lauffer, 26, of 304 Lincoln St., Seekonk, MA, was arrested on Sept. 25 at 11:41 p.m. and charged with domestic vandalism and possession of oxycodone. Lauffer allegedly smashed a ceramic pumpkin at his girlfriend's apartment during an argument and was arrested for domestic vandalism. Later, during an inventory search at the station, police found that he had approximately three oxycodone pills in his pocket with no prescription. He was charged, held and arraigned in district court the next day, He was released on $2,000 personal recognizance.

18-Year-Old High School Student Charged with Disorderly Conduct

Christopher E. Destremps, 18, of 132 Kearns Ave., Tiverton, was arrested on Sept. 27 at 9:09 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Destremps reportedly caused a scene at the high school by swearing and yelling at the vice principal. He then left school grounds where police allegedly saw him driving erratically on Fish Road and arrested him for his unruly conduct.

Warrants:

  • Jason R. Haley, 30, of 200 Fulton St., Apt. 21 was arrested on Sept. 19 at 10:27 a.m. Police stopped Haley's car on Judson Street because he was not wearing a safety belt. A subsequent computer check showed that Haley was wanted for failure to appear for payment review. He was arraigned in district court later that day.
  • George Stephan St. Pierre, 50, of 2669 South Main St., Apt. 3R, Fall River was arrested on Sept. 24 at 4:55 p.m. on a district court bench warrant for failure to appear for sentencing. He was released from custody later that day after he posted $500 in bail.
  • Craig Nacimento, 30, of 195 Raymond St., Fall River, was arrested on Sept. 24 at 5:53 p.m. and charged with writing fraudulent checks. According to reports, Nacimento was wanted for a 2008 incident where he wrote a check in the amount of $308.50 to Construction Materials Corp. on Fish Road. The check reportedly bounced and Nacimento failed to make restitution. He was arraigned and released on $500 bail with surety.
  • Jason M. Morreira, 27, of 37 Pershing Ave., Tiverton was arrested on Sept. 25 at 5:20 p.m. on a Sixth Division District Court bench warrant. According to reports, Morreira turned himself in at police headquarters where he was held for arraignment in district court the next day.
