The award is given to a Sailor "demonstrating superior performance in the line of duty," according to a United States Navy press release. "Each Warrior of the Day is hand selected from more than 3,000 Truman Sailors assigned to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 and recognized by Truman’s Commanding Officer Capt. Ryan B. Scholl."

Syliva was picked for outstanding performance while serving as RM11 assistant work center supervisor aboard the vessel. Along with completing his duties flawlessly, "he used his expert technical abilities to perform a complex overhaul of VRA-V31 which was vital to restoration of remote valve operability and reactor safety. This ensured timely recovery of number one reactor which allowed Truman to continue to carry out its mission," the Navy said.
