Tiverton Team Plans Historic Launch, Again

There might have been a few postponements, but a Tiverton team hopes to finally launch its unmanned vessel this Saturday, June 29, on a historic, transatlantic journey.

Residents are invited to watch this Saturday at Fogland Beach, starting at 9 a.m.

After three years of hard work and many models, an unmanned, solar-powered boat, named "Scout," will begin its 3,400-mile trip across the Atlantic Ocean.

"We found something that hasn't been done before," said team member and Tiverton resident Dylan Rodriguez in a prior interview with Patch.

The 13-foot long boat will be tracked remotely from Fogland Beach in Tiverton, Rhode Island, to a yet-to-be-determined location in Spain. The public will be able to follow the boat over several months on a special website expected to launch later this summer.

If successful, Scout is expected to become the first unmanned boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean above water.

"We are all on this journey together, and there's no chance that we'd let this boat go without the whole crew on that beach. We'll see you on the 29th. Bring your binoculars," the team writes on the Scout Facebook page.
