Currently, Patch does not have a local curator for Woonsocket (or Pawtucket!). However, in the interim, we still want to make sure you are up-to-date on all of your local happenings, so I am here to fill in! Although not a local, I will work diligently to keep everyone in the community informed. And, if you are interested in becoming the new local Woonsocket or Pawtucket curator, apply here.

Here are the top stories today in Woonsocket:

  1. Planet Fitness in Woonsocket was the scene of a patriotic display Saturday night. Firefighters from the Manville and Quinnville FDs took over the stair climbers. In full gear, they climbed the equivalent of 110 flights. Their intent was to honor “those who sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001.” (WPRI 12)
  2. The Blackstone Valley Prep charter schools are short on bus drivers. The system has six schools and space for 36 buses. Now, the transportation system is down to 21 buses. Drivers are “afraid to get on the bus with the kids” because of COVID-19. Others were furloughed and accepted other jobs while kids were remote learning. The superintendent of the Blackstone Valley Prep charter schools urges residents to “pick up the phone, get that CDL and come drive a school bus.” (WPRI)
  3. Prep sports schedules are heating up, and Woonsocket is not immune to football fever. Old cross-town rivalries are being rekindled. The boys’ varsity football team from Woonsocket HS will take on Central HS. The Novans hope to beat the Knights Friday evening at Central. (Patch)
  4. Woonsocket is at the tail end of this year’s fall color routes. Insiders suggest driving up Route 102 “before finally petering out near Woonsocket.” There is the promise of a gorgeous autumn drive, “full of technicolor trees.” (The Newport Daily News)
