Woonsocket’s COVID-19 vaccination rate continues to lag behind the state average. Also, a young man is facing 50 years in federal prison. Finally, Hurricane Ida deposited quite a bit of water locally.
Here are the top stories today in Woonsocket:
- The adult vaccination rate of Woonsocket residents has reached 47.5%. In comparison, the current state vaccination rate is at 64.7%. There is concern that the emergency order, currently scheduled to lift on September 18, may stay in place unless vaccination rates increase. However, critics are not ready to give in. “I’m not ready to get the vaccine until it’s proven that it really prevents (people) from getting it,” a School Committee member said. (Valley Breeze)
- A 25-year-old man pleaded guilty to “drug trafficking and firearms charges” in Providence and Woonsocket. It appears that the individual used social media to ply his trade. Instead of serving out the five-year suspended state sentence he was on for “possession with the intent to deliver cocaine,” he now faces up to 50 years in federal prison. Sentencing will take place November 18. (DOJ)
- Hurricane Ida has dropped quite a bit of rain on the state. Woonsocket alone received 4.45 inches. (Patch)
- Jose Rivera received plenty of shout-outs on Facebook for being a Mensch, giving haircuts free on Robinson Street. (FB)
- The weekly arrest reports are in. A 28-year-old Woonsocket local was arrested on August 23 in Barnstable for two counts of warrant arrests. (CapeCod)
