Here are the top stories today in Woonsocket:
- The City Council has asked the owner of Black Restaurant, on Mendon Road, to “install a sound barrier and end all outdoor entertainment by 9 p.m.” Last week, the restaurant’s outdoor entertainment license was up for renewal, and the City Council had received noise complaints. The owner feels “singled out.” Also, he does not know what standards he has to meet to have acceptable noise levels. (The Valley Breeze)
- There is a kerfuffle at the Woonsocket Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (WHA). The WHA Assistant Security Director allegedly sent a threatening email to the WHA Chairman. The Director’s union rep denied the threat and requested that the WHA Executive Director “cease his investigation immediately.” In turn, the union accuses the Chairman of “overstepping his position and threatening to take away my member’s ability to provide for his family based solely on an unremarkable and professionally worded email.” (The Valley Breeze)
- A Dominican national has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison. He “operated a drug stash house and arranged for the sale of fentanyl on multiple occasions, and used the stolen identity and Social Security number of another person to gain Rhode Island Medicaid benefits and Rhode Island driver’s licenses and permits.” The Woonsocket PD arranged “for four undercover purchases of fentanyl.” (Justice Department)
- Senator Cynthia Mendes (D-East Providence) and fellow democrat Matt Brown intend to stage a “progressive takeover of Rhode Island’s state government.” They are members of the Rhode Island Political Cooperative. A list of the Cooperative’s candidates for 2022 include Woonsocket City Council members Marlene Guay and Charmaine Webster. (The Public’s Radio)
