Here are the top stories in Woonsocket today:

  1. Even as local officials are encouraging Woonsocket residents to get their COVID-19 vaccinations, the RI Department of Health warns of the Mu variant. It has been confirmed as present in the state. It appears the Mu may be more resistant to current vaccines, but Delta is far more contagious. (ABC 6)
  2. Governor Daniel McKee‘s Overdose Taskforce members demanded that recent budget cuts would be addressed. As you may remember, these cuts affected agencies involved in reducing overdose deaths. Critics suggest that faith-based initiatives receive funding and federal funds are not allocated to their agencies. Governor McKee was not present at the meeting. When BHDDH Director Richard Charest “refused to commit to level funding the programs until new sources of funding could be secured,” most Taskforce members walked out of the meeting. (UpriseRI)
  3. The Woonsocket Rotary Club completed the construction of the Just For You clothing closet at Community Care Alliance. Located at 245 Main Street, it “offers new and gently used clothing, toiletries, backpacks and diapers for foster children and other families in need.” Hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. and by appointment. (The Valley Breeze, Rotary Club of Woonsocket)
  4. Mount Saint Charles Academy has named Lisa Lydon as its new director of advancement. She will be in charge of institutional advancement operations, which include fundraising and community engagement. Mount Saint Charles Academy is located at 800 Logee Street, where it strives to create a “supportive atmosphere that is free of bullying in all its forms.” (@mountsaintcharles, MSCA)
