Currently, Patch does not have a local curator for Woonsocket (or Pawtucket!). However, in the interim, we still want to make sure you are up-to-date on all of your local happenings, so I am here to fill in! Although not a local, I will work diligently to keep everyone in the community informed. And if you are interested in becoming the new local Woonsocket or Pawtucket curator, apply here.

Here are the top stories today in Woonsocket:

  1. The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) doesn’t like automated license plate readers and wants Woonsocket, Pawtucket, and Cranston to stop using them. You may remember that they were installed just a month ago as part of a 60-day trial. The ACLU suggests that the readers capture “far more information than merely license plate numbers, and can even search for cars by their bumper stickers.” In response, the Cranston City Council is meeting on Monday to discuss the issue. No word yet if Woonsocket’s City Council will follow suit. (WPRI)
  2. Just in time for Recovery Month, “agencies that are working to deliver recovery services on the ground in Rhode Island have been hit with severe funding cuts by Rhode Island BHDDH.” Governor McKee responded to questions by parsing terms. “So if the federal dollars are not there that’s not a cut, that means the federal dollars are no longer available,” he said. Adding insult to injury, there is a problem with published data. A Woonsocket recovery advocate noted a spike in overdoses in August. The RI Department of Health has no record of this. (UpriseRI)
  3. The Massachusetts Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28 plans to spend September 11 with a corn hole tournament at the American Legion Post 85. Make a $50 donation and participate in the cookout. There will be cash prizes! Head to 870 River Street around 11 a.m. (The Valley Breeze)
  4. The Woonsocket Harris Public Library reminds residents that September is “Library Card Sign-Up Month.” Residents who don’t have a card or cannot find theirs are welcome to sign up. When you’re there, don’t forget to get your FREE financial literacy curriculum kit for youngsters between three and nine. (Woonsocket Harris Public Library)
  5. The RI Hospitality Association announces that RIHA membership opens the door to discounts. One example is music licensing. Representatives also offer other savings for business owners in the hospitality industry. (RI Hospitality Association)
