Woonsocket: Parents Face Childsnatching Charges

Police found the family in Florida. The baby is well, state police said.

WOONSOCKET, RI — A couple who took their baby Monday and went to Florida are facing extradition back to Rhode Island, state police said Friday. Daniel Campos, 38, and Gabriela Paz were staying in Woonsocket on Monday when the Family Court ordered them not to have unsupervised contact with their baby. Their infant was placed in foster care with a relative. But Monday night, the couple took the baby and told the relative they would "return very soon," police allege. They did not come back.

Late Tuesday night, police were notified the child and parents were missing. State police said they broadcast a missing person's alert an notified police departments in areas where the couple might go. They also obtained a warrant for the parents' arrest on a childsnatching charge.

The family was found Thursday morning in Jacksonville, Fla. Florida child welfare workers took custody of the baby and an older boy, 3. The parents were arrested "without incident," police said, and are being held as fugitives from justice. Both children will be returned to Rhode Island and stay in the Department of Children, Youth and Families custody.
