The Woonsocket Police Department is investigating how a stolen car ended up in the Blackstone River on Wednesday morning.

Woonsocket Police Det. Sgt. Matthew Ryan said that a witness reported the car submerged in the water at around 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle had been seen sinking into the river at around 7:30 a.m. but Ryan said he didn’t report it until three hours later.

The car had apparently been reported stolen about 30 minutes after the witness saw it in the river, police said, and it took a few hours for crews to remove it from the water.

A team of divers helped in the recovery effort that began with concerns that there might be someone trapped inside.

The vehicle ended up being found empty and detectives are investigating.

Ryan said that damage to the rear bumper indicated that the driver struck something before the vehicle ended up in the river.

Police are asking for anyone with information to call police.
