Plan for bike lane across Ashely River headed to SCDOT
State must sign off on project before any work could begin

CHARLESTON - With high profile deaths of cyclists in the news recently, city and council officials are promoting a plan to turn one of the lanes on the northbound Hwy. 17 bridge over the Ashley River into a bicycle and pedestrian lane.
Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley and Charleston County Council Chairman Teddie Pryor, Sr., spoke about the plan durig a presentation of the results of a traffic study for the project held at Brittlebank park on Tuesday. However, there are still many questions about the project in addition to whether the state will approve, including it's overall cost, how bike riders and pedestrians will access the bridge and when a public hearing on the project will be held.
The Post and Courier has more on the proposal here.
