Wanted Man Captured After Tip From Citizen

Police apprehended a wanted suspect after tip from a citizen who saw Hawkins in downtown Charleston.

CHARLESTON - Police took Stephen Douglas Hawkins into custody Thursday afternoon following a tip from the public.

Hawkins is charged with strong armed robbery stemming from an incident on Tuesday, in which three men jumped a Charelston man on Huger Street. Police circulated Hawkins' photo on Wednesday asking for help from the public in locating him.

Following a tip from a citizen that Hawkins was on America Street, police were able to find Hawkins at the corner of Reid and America streets downtown, according to Charleston Police Public Information Officer Charles Francis.
