📰 News we're reading

• Lexington County growth surges as school crowding blocks some subdivisions and reshapes reviews (wltx.com) — Lexington County leaders spent 2025 approving some major new subdivisions while blocking others over crowded schools and infrastructure concerns, especially around Gaston and Red Bank. Several hundred homes were greenlit, but projects like Avanti Townhomes and the Enclave at Woodtrail stalled or died. Late in the year, officials quietly changed policy so school districts are no longer formally consulted on capacity when new neighborhoods are approved.

• ‘They think a lot like us': Cotton Branch Sanctuary provides lifeline for pigs (southcarolinapublicradio.org) — A long-running farm sanctuary in Lexington County is caring for about 200 rescued pigs, including many needing special medical attention, and is currently at capacity. Run on donations and volunteers, Cotton Branch is rebuilding its volunteer base while also advocating for stronger farm animal protections and offering guidance to current and prospective pig owners across South Carolina.

• Here are the top 2025 stories for the Midlands (wistv.com) — A year-end roundup of major Midlands stories includes a deadly bus crash involving Pine Ridge Middle School in Lexington School District Two, plus a brain-eating amoeba case at Lake Murray and a lightning strike that injured swimmers there. It also revisits high-profile crime cases, a USC swatting hoax, and several community stories that shaped 2025 across the Columbia area.
