📰 News we're reading
1. Judge sides with The State in school board open meetings lawsuit (thestate.com) — A South Carolina judge ruled that Lexington-Richland 5 violated the state’s Freedom of Information Act when its school board approved a secret payout deal with a former superintendent behind closed doors. The decision, favoring The State newspaper, reinforces that public business must be conducted openly so citizens can monitor school district decisions. Further orders in the case are still being considered.

2. Lexington County road remains dangerous despite recent repairs (wistv.com) — Drivers on St. Peter’s Road off US-378 in Lexington County say the stretch remains dangerous despite recent SCDOT patching, especially a downhill curve near Wise Ferry Road. With about 12,000 cars and regular pedestrian traffic daily, residents are pressing the state for a firm timeline on full resurfacing before a serious crash or school bus incident occurs.

3. Suspect arrested in 2021 Cayce homicide after years on the run (wltx.com) — A homicide suspect in a 2021 Cayce killing is now being held without bond at the Lexington County Detention Center after years of allegedly evading arrest under multiple aliases. Authorities say a recent tip to North Charleston Police led U.S. Marshals to capture the man, who is charged with murder in the fatal shooting discovered at a Cayce mobile home park.

4. Operation Ganjapreneur indictments for illegal THC sales in SC (wjbf.com) — Lexington County is one of two counties where 12 people now face 40 state grand jury charges tied to allegedly illegal THC products sold in South Carolina. Local deputies joined a large multi-agency raid seizing thousands of pounds of marijuana-related items, and officials say the case is driving a push for stricter statewide rules on who can buy THC products.
