Powerball Winner Claims $400 Million Prize

A Columbia-area man who stopped to pick up hot dog buns from the Murphy Express in Lexington purchased the winning Powerball jackpot ticket for $400 million. 

The ticket was presented to the S.C. Education Lottery Monday afternoon by a Columbia-area resident who asked to remain anonymous, lottery officials said in a release.

The man told lottery officials that he stopped for gas at the Murphy Express on Wednesday when his wife called and told him to pick up hot dog buns, according to a release. He went inside the store for the buns but Murphy doesn't sell them. Instead he buys $20 worth of tickets.

The next day, the man was home alone when he checked his Powerball ticket. With no person to tell of his good fortune, he told his dog, lottery official said.

Wednesday's drawing was only the second time the man has played the lottery. The winning numbers were: 7 - 10 - 22 - 32 - 35 Powerball: 19.

Murphy Express will receive a $50,000 bonus now that the prize has been claimed. The state of South Carolina will get an additional $15 million in tax revenue and an additional $2 million in support of education.

Wednesday's jackpot wasn't the only win in South Carolina. A $1 million winning ticket was sold at the Tiger Express at 1257 Elm St. in Hampton, officials said. That prize has not been 

This is South Carolina’s 7th Powerball jackpot win and its largest at $399.4 million. This is the fourth largest jackpot in Powerball history.

South Carolina has yet to celebrate a Mega Millions jackpot win, but that could change tomorrow night, lottery officials said.
