Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Make sure you are prepared for the cold weather this weekend! According to wpde.com, "Horry County firefighters want residents to be alert and prepared as the cold weather moves in this weekend. What you should do: They recommend everyone test their smoke alarms in each sleeping area, hallway and living room. Make sure your carbon monoxide alarms are working; especially if you plan on using any kind of fuel-burning heating equipment. Make sure your entire family knows your emergency escape plan, including visiting family and guests. Have an emergency supply kit, including blankets, extra clothing, food and water. This can be helpful if you lose power. If you are using a wood fireplace, make sure your metal mesh screen is on. This will protect embers from shooting into your home. Keep an eye on the ABC 15 weather team, you can read their updated blog here." (wpde.com)
- Doing something good for the community, a Grand Strand pet owner enlists social media to donate $30,000 worth of supplies to Horry County animal shelters. According to WMBF, "Shelters across Horry County have reported issues with overcrowding. They say during the holidays, they see an increase in pet surrenders but do not have the space or the resources to take in animals. Grand Strand pet owner, Jennifer Archer, saw this demand and decided to do something. Archer then started Santa Claus for Paws. Archer said she makes an Amazon Wish List of the items needed and shares the link across social media. “For me, it’s Christmas and it’s all about you know being special and magical, and you know, helping out in other ways,” said Archer. She says she already has plans for next year and is expecting to go even bigger and help even more animals." (WMBF)
- No golf this weekend! According to Myhorrynews, "[Golf] course owners and operators on the Grand Strand [have] closed their courses in unison through Sunday, at least, in a preemptive move to protect their greens from damage that could impact the important and lucrative spring golf season and beyond. So you won’t be able to play golf on the Strand this weekend, but it’s for the greater good." (Myhorrynews)
- Teaching kids how to love themselves, a mother-daughter TikTok duo from Myrtle Beach has written a book to inspire. According to WBTW, "In the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the rise in the Black Lives Matter movement, Tiania Haneline started using daily affirmations with her daughter Scarlett Smith. She would repeat positive affirmations back to herself in the mirror while Haneline did Smith’s hair. For Haneline, a white mom, raising Smith, who is mixed race, it was important for her daughter to recognize how beautiful she is at an early age and to be confident in her brown skin. Now the positive affirmations will be expanded to writing through their book. It aims to help parents and kids learn different daily affirmations to incorporate into their lives. Smith wants kids to learn how to love themselves, how to be strong and how to be confident. The book comes out in January." (WBTW)
- Residents take note, according to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, "Effective March 7, 2023, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) will no longer conduct motorcycle skills tests at the Myrtle Beach Commons branch office, located at 1330 Howard Parkway Myrtle Beach. Motorcycle skills test will still be available at the Myrtle Beach branch office located at 1200 21st Ave. North Myrtle Beach. (SCDVM via twitter)
