Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Part of the "Give a Child Some Paint" project, a new mural that children from a local after-school program helped paint can be seen in downtown Myrtle Beach along Broadway Street. According to wpde.com, "Tommy Simpson is the mural artist, and the students joined in by painting some of the pastel leaves. Work on the mural started last week and it was completed Tuesday by Tommy and the children." Check it out! (wpde.com)
- In an effort to slow motorists down, Surfside Beach Police have installed new solar-powered speed radars in residential areas. According to wpde.com, "Two of those radars are on 16th Avenue North, and police say there will be two more on 10th Avenue South. If the radar detects you are driving too fast, the sign will flash bright lights. According to the police chief, the majority of speeding tickets are handed out during tourist season." (wpde.com)
- After Hurricane Ian, Surfside Beach Police Dept.Chief Hofmann began looking into a solution to high-water rescues in Surfside. The solution; a 20,000-pound military surplus vehicle. According to wpde.com, "this retired troop carrier retails at $184,000 but the town got it for free thanks to the 1033 Program, which hands out military surplus to police and fire departments across the nation. The truck can easily make it through five feet of water, something Chief Hofmann said none of their other vehicles could ever manage to do.After adding some police lights and getting some officers trained on driving it, the vehicle will be ready for service. The community can expect to see it at Surfside's annual parades this year." (wpde.com)
- According to wpde.com, "Grand Strand Freedom Week continues to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On Tuesday, the Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance partnered with the Carolina African American Heritage Foundation to host an economic development summit to allow minority businesses in the area a chance to learn about opportunities for growth. The summit included panel discussions and keynote speaker, architect Michael Allen, who spoke on the small business ecosystem and supporting community collaboration." (wpde.com)
- The CAN Jam is back and this time it's unplugged. According to WMBF,"Artists will include, Greg Rowles, Paige King Johnson, Rod France, Timmy Pierce and Jebb Mac! Join them for a 5-course dinner while listening to the acoustic music from these wonderful [musicians]. All proceeds benefit Champion Autism Network.
