Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. The developers of Surfworks, (which is slated to be South Carolina's first surf and adventure park) are getting excited because word is that construction on the ultra-cool, wicked fun park could begin sometime this year. That's great news since the hope is the park will be completed and ready to open by 2025. The park will boast a surf lagoon, an on-site skatepark, an amphitheater and a variety of eateries. (WMBF)
  2. At the Myrtle Beach City Council workshop held on Tuesday, the Myrtle Beach Fire Department urged that the only focus for lifeguards should be on beach safety. The way things are currently, lifeguards also handle beach chair rentals, which is allowed as per the beach service franchise agreement. The fire department recommends amending the current franchise agreement and separating lifeguards and rental staff, which would follow the United States Life Saving Association’s guidelines for beach safety. 3. Are you ready for the rodeo? Mark your calendars for the South Carolina High School Rodeo Association championship, which will be held on March 17 and 18 at Res-Les Farm located at 1208 Gilbert Rd. in Conway. The gate opens at 6:30 p.m. with performances starting at 8 p.m. Reportedly 150 students will be competing, many are locals and others will be coming from all over the state. Events will include bull and bronc riding, barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping and steer wrestling. Students in high school and junior high will be competing to win money, scholarships and a chance to progress to nationals. Tickets are $10. Children under five are free. Hope to see you there! 4. Tuesday, the Myrtle Beach Planning Commission unanimously approved a plan for the development of 200 plus homes in the Market Common area. The development is reportedly slated for the corner of Farrow Parkway and Phyllis Boulevard and although a traffic study was done that stated,"roads will not be negatively impacted by the development," pushback from some residents is still in place. According to WMBF, "HOA president of the Reserve at Market Common, Paul Meunier, said he and other residents will not stop their fight against the project and plan to voice their concerns to the city council." (WMBF)
  5. Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Look no further, this weekend Clash at the Coast is returning to Myrtle Beach Sports Center on March 11-12. Come enjoy some great volleyball competition. Tickets are $20 for a weekend pass, or $12 single-day pass. See you there! ( Showtime Events)
