Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. The Horry County Fire Rescue has reached a major milestone — one million calls! According to wpde.com, "Horry County Fire Rescue reached a record number of calls in 2022 with one million since 2001. A medical call in the Myrtle Beach area Saturday was number 76,925 and marks 210 calls per day on average, more than 2021's record call volume total of 74,857, according to a release. "2022 was our busiest year to date, but we're never typically too caught up in the 'then' and 'now,' but always planning for what's next," Horry County Fire Rescue said. "HCFR thrives on our mission to be Committed to Excellence, and for more progress and improvement ahead!" (wpde.com)

  3. According to wpde.com, "residents may have seen a large police presence in Surfside Beach Sunday as officers responded to a domestic assault situation. The Surfside Beach Police Dept. said it responded to the area of Ocean Boulevard at 7th Avenue South for the incident involving weapons. Police added a suspect was taken into custody nearby after fleeing the scene and an injured person was cared for by EMS. There is no ongoing danger to the community. The Horry County Police Dept. also assisted." (wpde.com)
  4. Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune shares her goals for 2023. According to WMBF, "there are a few key things on Bethune’s list of goals, but she said sprucing up the downtown area takes the top spot. “We have to have a great downtown. That’s vital for the future of this community. To bring younger people in, to bring business and to bring the right people that we want to live, work and invest here,” said Bethune. Bethune said she’s looking forward to making the Arts and Innovations District the best it can be and she’s especially looking forward to the new performing arts center." (WMBF)
  5. Are you wondering what to do with your Christmas tree now that the holiday is over? According to WBTW, "real Christmas trees are recyclable and should be disposed of properly. That’s where the city of Myrtle Beach and the Horry County Solid Waste Authority can help.
For more than 20 years, ‘Grinding of the Greens’ has been giving Grand Strand residents an easy way to recycle their Christmas trees and give back to the community.
All you have to do is leave your tree on the curb outside your home and a crew will pick it up. “Crews will take it to the transfer station and eventually we’ll have a huge pile of Christmas trees, and they’ll turn that into mulch,” city spokesperson Meredith Denari said. The city will be picking up trees through Jan. 29. Anyone living in Myrtle Beach, Aynor, Conway, Loris and Surfside Beach can participate." (WBTW)
