Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. An incident involving a gun Saturday afternoon on Ocean Boulevard has Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune urging state lawmakers to rethink the South Carolina House bill that if passed would allow anyone over 18 to carry a loaded concealed weapon, without a permit or training. This incident marks the second gun-related event that’s happened on Ocean Boulevard in weeks. According to WMBF, "Bethune said, ‘What does that say to every community across our state? When we’re going to just allow people to carry guns without any training.’ The Myrtle Beach Police Department said it is using city-wide security cameras, which they say captured the entire incident, as help in their investigation." (WMBF)
  2. May 1 marks the beginning of South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control's annual beach monitoring season. Water samples from 122 locations along the Grand Strand beaches will be routinely monitored and tested during the summer months to ensure water quality to protect public health. Summer beachgoers are urged to stay informed. (WBTW)
  3. Did you know that Saturday, April 22, is National Record Store Day? Kilgore Trouts in Myrtle Beach did and it is gearing up to celebrate. The store, now located at 1572 North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach will be offering giveaways, sales and special release vinyl records. Stop in and see what they have. (wpde.com)
  4. There is a proposal to build five dorm-like housing structures to house J1 international students in Myrtle Beach. The proposal is proposing to re-zone an area of 7.5 acres of vacant land at the corner of Mr. Joe White Avenue and Robert Grissom Parkway. According to wpde, "the proposal states it's necessary because the city relies on international students to sustain the seasonal workforce and the group needs adequate housing during their stay." The first full reading of the proposal is set for April 25 at 10 a.m. following city council meeting at the council chamber on Oak Street. (wpde.com)
