- Lifeguards in Horry County will only have one job this summer — saving lives. In the past lifeguards were also responsible for handling chair and umbrella rentals however, that "dual role" lifeguarding is now a thing of the past. On March 21, according to the Charleston Post Courier, "the Horry County Council approved three separate seven-year beach franchise agreements that prohibit dual-role lifeguarding." (Charleston Post Courier)
- It's an odd spot, but she is calling it home. A Canadian goose has decided to make her nest for the season in a Myrtle Beach Food Lion parking lot. To help keep the bird and her soon to be family safe, the Myrtle Beach Police Department has worked with the Food Lion to set up a blockade of caution tape, traffic cones and warning signs to ensure that the goose’s spot is not disturbed. According to wpde.com, "Canada geese are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act of 1918, which means it is illegal to harass or harm a goose. This law also makes it illegal to move or damage the nest or eggs without a proper permit. Fines for breaking this law start at $5,000 but can go as high as $10,000. The geese nest [and] typically lay five or six eggs at a time. They sit on top incubating the eggs for around four weeks. This means that residents in the Myrtle Beach area can expect to see some baby geese exploring Food Lion in late April." (wpde.com)
- Let's play ball! Myrtle Beach's Senior Softball League open day was held Tuesday including the first-ever 70+ league. Gaining more than just a way to stay fit and get outside, league members enjoy the interaction with others. According to wpde.com, "Myrtle Beach Senior Softball League Committee Member Scott Beech said,’The 50+ senior league is where I started making all my friends. So, literally after the games, you'll see a lot of these players going out and enjoy some time together. Once again when you join one of these leagues, you all of a sudden have fifty new friends.’" (wpde.com)
