Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Who will be this year's Teacher of the Year for Horry County Schools? The winner will be announced in April. Here are the five candidates: Brennan Allen, a special education teacher at Carolina Forest High School. Emma Lyn Cain at Pee Dee Elementary. James Carter teaches science for 11th and 12th graders, including AP Biology and the AP Capstone course at Scholars Academy. Meredith Chandler teaches at North Myrtle Beach High School Algebra 2 Honors for 9th, 10th and 11th graders, as well as probability and statistics. Suzanne Troiani teaches honors and CP level English at Socastee High. Good luck teachers! (Myhorrynews)
  2. Changes could be coming to parking in downtown Conway. The city council is considering putting in 500 parking meters at a price tag of $250,000 (which would come from its hospitality fund) along Main Street, Laurel Street, Elm Street, Beaty Street, Kingston Street, Norman Alley and 4th, 3rd and 2nd avenues. The proposal is that the meters would charge $1 an hour for parking 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Money raised from the meters would go into a parking district fund and be used toward improving and/or adding new parking areas. Touting that taxpayers would not have to carry the expense of parking improvements in the area the proposed parking meters are being considered with the city’s 2023-2024 municipal budget. (WMBF)
  3. After being shot in the head twice with a shotgun blast on Saturday night during an altercation at Phoenix Security Solutions in a Carolina Forest neighborhood, security guard Ricky Wise was released from the hospital Sunday. According to WMBF, "Phoenix Security Solutions explained on a Facebook post that the shooting was a result of Wise trying to de-escalate an altercation between the suspect and another neighbor. The company said at some point the suspect grabbed Wise’s body camera and ran into a house. Phoenix Security Solutions President Mike Arrington said the suspect then came outside with a shotgun and fired at Wise. Wise was hit two times by shotgun pellets and sustained injuries in the face, head and neck. Wise shot the suspect three times, in the chest, arm and head, according to Arrington. Wise said he never thought he would ever use his gun as a security guard." (WMBF)
  4. In an effort to keep the four-legged members of the Horry County public safety team, safe and healthy, first responders trained this week on how to properly care for injured public safety K9s. According to WMBF, "both Horry County Fire Rescue and Police Department have specific dogs that assist them in investigations and calls of service. Part of that training [to keep them safe] involved first responders working at the Horry County Animal Care Center and learning how to take care of the dogs if they ever get injured on the job."
