Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. In an effort to help combat the opioid crisis in Horry County, the Horry County Police Department (HCPD) is looking to add two narcotic detectives. HCPD has requested that county council approve a $466,000 grant to be used to hire the needed detectives. The main focus of these two new positions would be on opioid deaths. According to WBTW, "In 2020, Horry County ranked No. 1 in the state of South Carolina for prescription drug overdose deaths, opioid overdose deaths and the overall number of drug overdose deaths. It also ranked No. 1 for the number of Naloxone administrations by EMS. The drug is used to reverse an overdose. The grant was approved at a recent public safety meeting and will make its way to county council for a first reading on Feb. 21." (WBTW)
  2. Get ready to smell some gas and hear some engines roar as the 34th annual Run to the Sun Car and Truck show returns to the Grand Strand March 16-18 at Old Myrtle Square Mall located at 2501 North Kings Highway. Featuring over 3,500 cars, the Run to the Sun is considered the largest independent classic car show on the East Coast. This year boasts a new section called Gasoline Alley, a collection of vintage race cars, dragsters and gassers. I can't wait! (wpde.com)
  3. With an eye toward safety, providing another hurricane evacuation route in Horry County is an important issue, but also a costly one. The price tag for the construction of the Southern Evacuation Lifeline (SELL) is a reported $450 million just for phase one. But, can you put a price tag on saving lives in the midst of a natural disaster? (WBTW)
  4. Quick thinking and good training saved a life and got seven citizens honored for life-saving actions at North Myrtle Beach Aquatic and Fitness Center. Clay Nichols (AFC Member), Joseph Mannino (AFC Member), Peter Bleyer (AFC Member), Scott Baucom (AFC Member), Mendel Bell (AFC Member), Anastasia Thomas (AFC Employee) and Gene Hepner (AFC Employee) all received the Citizens Heroism Award from the North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue Department for their actions in saving the life of Andy Hamer. Hamer was on the rowing machine, back in December, at the Fitness Center. He started having breathing problems, collapsed and immediately went into cardiac arrest. The seven individuals mentioned rushed to his aid and reportedly performed CPR and used an AED until rescue crews arrived. According to WMBF, "North Myrtle Beach Fire Chief Garry Spain told the honorees that Hamer is alive because of their knowledge of CPR and their willingness to help." Congratulations, you are all heroes! (WMBF)
