📰 News we're reading

1. CARTA internal audit suggests financial stability, longterm challenges (timesfreepress.com) — Chattanooga’s CARTA transit system just received a clean internal audit, showing generally sound financial management but highlighting serious long-term challenges like a $13 million pension liability and minimal cash reserves. A new $34.8 million budget leans on higher revenue projections and more city and county support, even as federal and state subsidies remain crucial to keeping buses running.

2. Santa Claus Delivers Bag Of Goodies To East Ridge Border Region Business Owners (chattanoogan.com) — East Ridge businesses near the Georgia line just received nearly $6 million in state border-region sales tax incentives, with major checks going to developers and Southern Honda Power Sports, whose leader is Chattanooga’s mayor. The city of East Ridge also used a large share for debt, capital projects, and its general fund, with payouts expected annually until 2042.

3. Tennessee holiday heist: Man charged with taking $10K in presents from Christmas tree (foxchattanooga.com) — Deputies in nearby Sale Creek say they recovered about $10,000 in Christmas gifts, TVs, toys, and a lawnmower stolen from a Hamilton County family’s home just days before Christmas. Investigators quickly traced the loot to a property a few miles away, arrested a 31-year-old suspect, and returned everything in time to salvage the family’s holiday.

4. Barbara S. Anderson (chattanoogan.com) — Chattanooga-area residents are remembering Signal Mountain’s Barbara S. Anderson, born on Mitchell Avenue in Chattanooga and deeply involved in local churches and community life. Her family invites friends to a Jan. 3 celebration of her life at Ridgedale Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Rosalie, Alabama, and suggests donations to Chattanooga Children’s Home or Ridgedale Baptist.
