- Cap off your Memorial Day weekend with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, which will be kicking off its Parks Concerts with its annual Memorial Day concert and firework show. The concert will tip off with a performance from a City of Dallas Community Artist Program artist and the show will continue with more patriotic favorites, movie music, and more. The concert will be on May 29 at 8:15 p.m. at Flag Pole Hill Park; admission to the concert is free. (CultureMap Dallas)
- The Dallas International Film Festival began its week-long festivities Friday night, continuing through May 5 at West Village Uptown as well as at the Oak Cliff's Texas Theater. Artistic Director James Faust described the festival as a homecoming returning to West Village after a four-year absence. This year's festival will feature more than 100 films from 30 countries as well as red carpets, Q&As with filmmakers, and various special events. Be one of the thousands in attendance at this week-long event and enjoy a taste of modern cinema; a film schedule can be viewed here. (Preston Hollow Advocate)
- A shootout occurred early Friday morning between an officer, his K-9, and a suspect that resulted in the officer and his K-9 being injured, and the suspect being shot and killed. Officers responded to calls Thursday night about a suspect shooting his mother and his sister, followed by reports of a man knocking on doors with blood on him. The K-9 tracked down the suspect in a wooded area near Briggs where the shootout began; an officer was shot in the vest and leg and a K-9 was shot through the shoulder before taking down the suspect. It has been confirmed that these injuries were non-life threatening to both the officer and the dog, as well as the mother and the sister. As of Friday, the incident is still under investigation.
