- Residents and preservationists want to work to prevent the disappearance of the historic Tenth Street neighborhood, one of the only remaining communities established by formerly enslaved people. Today, the neighborhood shows signs of disinvestment, with homes closed, illegal dumping, squatting, and many incidents of house fires. The community hopes that presenting a plan for investment in basic infrastructure such as sidewalks, street pavement, and public safety will help with revitalization. (D Magazine)
- The City of Dallas Park and Recreation Board delayed its vote on changes to the 50-mile "Loop" trail amid a lawsuit from a development company and project price increases. The board approved an $11.5 million dollar contractor, Fain Group; however, it has been sued by Gadberry Construction, which reportedly submitted a lower bid but was denied due to not having the proper experience. Due to the delay; the cost of the project has risen; regardless, construction has begun, and the board plans to use the delay to renegotiate the contract. (KRLD)
- Juan Eduardo Martinez has been charged with murder after Dallas police say he rammed his vehicle into two men in the same week. A Dallas County Grand Jury delivered indictments on Apr. 13 against Martinez on two murder charges and two counts of accident in connection to the killings of Juan Manuel Cardona Jr. and Otis Charles Buford. Video footage has been captured recording both fatal crashes. Martinez's attorney says that this string of episodes may be caused by something else, and until they know what was happening in his mind before and during the incidents, "he is still presumed innocent."
