Texas Voters Send Multiple Candidates Into Runoffs
The May 1 election saw Dallas City Council incumbents resilient, while the race to fill the late Ron Wright's House Seat remains a contest.

DALLAS— The officials results in the 2021 Texas election are in, showing who won each race on the ballot in the May 1 contest.
US House Of Representatives, District 6
In the race to fill the US House seat of the late Ron Wright, who died of COVID-19 and cancer-related causes in February, Wright's widow took an early lead and saw it expand over the course of the evening. She is now, with 19 percent of the vote, her name recognition and an endorsement from ex-president Donald Trump, set to take on state Rep. Jake Ellzey in the runoff on June 5.

Ellzey, who ended the night with 14 percent of the talley, is not unknown to Texas voters, since he lost to Wright's late husband in the 2018 election. And while Wright basked in Trump's support, Ellzey relied on native son Rick Perry as a campaign booster.
Third place went to Democratic challenger Jana Lynne Sachez, who won 13 percent of the votes cast. Although the district has been a GOP stronghold for decades, Republican margins of victory have been shrinking over the last three election cycles.

In all, it was a fairly typical Texas election day, except for a macabre 11th hour element of political theater. Yesterday Wright revealed that she and her staff have approached law enforcement about investigating a series of anonymous robocalls earlier in the week that claimed the candidate had "murdered" her late husband.
Over the course of a minute, the unidentified female voice claimed that Wright had taken out a million-dollar life insurance policy on her husband and then intentionally contracted COVID-19. Rep. Ron Wright died in February from coronavirus complications, although he had also been suffering from cancer.
Dallas City Council
Among the 56 candidates jockeying for a spot on the Dallas City Council, incumbents met with mixed results. Based on tabulations close to 1 a.m., runoffs could be in store for nearly half of the candidates in the race. Of the 11 incumbents, seven seem on the verge of reclaiming their seats, if the current trajectory continues through the final vote count.
In several districts without incumbents on the ballot — 2, 11 and 13, for example, the races remain tight. And for those who were defending their seats, Carolyn King Arnold, Adam Bazaldua, David Blewett and Jaimie Resendez, all might well be headed into runoffs. For the moment, it appears that Tennell Atkins, Paula Blackmon, Adam McGough, Cara Mendelsohn, Omar Narvaez, Casey Thomas and Chad West will retain their council seats.
Runoffs are required when no single candidate is able to get past 50 percent threshold of votes. The next term, in which the winners of today's election will be seated, begins June 14. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson was not on Saturday's ballot because a mayor's term as chief city executive is four years rather than the council's two, and Johnson was elected in 2019.
Here are the vote tallies as of Sunday, May 2 at 7:30 a.m.:
