Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- ChangingSA made its debut at the San Antonio Rodeo on Feb. 20. It's a mobile changing unit for disabled persons, with these helpful features: accessible toilet, adjustable height changing table, sink and a lift to move people from their wheelchairs to the table. This unit will be used for various outdoor events, festivals and other community activities. "According to a news release, ChangingSA was developed thanks in part to a $100,000 grant that the organization Impact San Antonio awarded to nonprofit DisabilitySA." (Community Impact Newspaper)
- After the death of an 81-year-old man following a brutal dog attack, KSAT wants to share citizen concerns with Animal Control Services, about "experiences with aggressive and/or stray dogs in San Antonio." The city is notorious for its stray dog problems and the COVID-19 pandemic made that issue worse. "Earlier this month, Animal Care Services said within the first six weeks of this year, they encountered more than 600 loose dogs — 80% of which have homes." KSAT San Antonio has the full story.
- 2023 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards named eight teachers some of the best educators in Texas. Teachers were surprised with $1,000 checks for themselves and $1,000 for their classrooms, as well as cookies and flowers. "All finalists are invited to San Antonio on April 28, 2023, to compete on a statewide level for larger cashprizes totaling $430,000." H-E-B works with Texas Association of School Administrators on this award program to support education in the state. Stop by 550 KTSA for the full scoop!
- Backyard chickens are a popular trend with San Antonians, and an expert with Animal Care Services shares tips and rules for keeping chickens: Coops must be at least 50 ft. away from neighbors' homes and eight hens and one rooster are allowed per home. Being considerate of noise levels, keeping chickens in your own yard, and caring for the waste of hens so that it doesn't cause contamination issues with neighbors are a few other tips to consider before getting chicks. Check out the video on KENS5 for more information.
