The future of San Antonio is looking bright, thanks to the incredible young people working to strengthen our community. In partnership with T-Mobile, Patch is proud to spotlight future leaders like Sophia Rico, who are making a positive impact in and around San Antonio.

Sophia, a student at San Antonio’s Legacy of Educational Excellence (LEE) High School, has distinguished herself as a remarkable young leader through her outstanding academic and creative achievements. As a 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalist, Sophia represents the top tier of students nationwide, recognized for her exceptional academic performance. Her innovative approach to environmental science earned her first place in the 2023 World of 8 Billion contest with her project, Better Batteries for a Better Future, which explored how advancements in battery technology can combat climate change. Sophia’s passion for science is deeply inspired by her father, fueling her aspirations to become an electrical or materials engineer.

Outside academics, Sophia’s creativity shines in her artistic and literary pursuits. At just 13 years old, she published Ruby the Reindeer, a children’s Christmas book she began writing at age 10, showcasing her persistence and storytelling talent. She also excels as a member of LEE’s North East School of the Arts program, where she demonstrates her multifaceted skills in theater, music and dance. Whether founding book clubs or performing in productions like The Crucible, Sophia exemplifies leadership, creativity and dedication, making her a role model in her school and community.
