San Antonio is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that San Antonio has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • San Antonio has a river running through it, and you can take a boat tour to see the city from a unique perspective. The San Antonio River Walk, also known as Paseo del Rio, is a network of walkways along the river that is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. It's a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, and you can even take a boat tour to see the sights from the water.
  • San Antonio is home to the largest Mexican market in the United States. El Mercado, also known as Market Square, is a vibrant outdoor market where you can find everything from handmade crafts to authentic Mexican food. It's a great place to spend an afternoon shopping, eating and soaking up the local culture.
  • San Antonio has a thriving art scene. The city is home to the McNay Art Museum, which houses a collection of contemporary and modern art, as well as the San Antonio Museum of Art, which has an extensive collection of art from around the world. There are also numerous galleries and art studios throughout the city where you can see the work of local artists.
  • San Antonio is known for its fiestas. The city is home to several major festivals throughout the year, including Fiesta San Antonio, which is a 10-day celebration in April that includes parades, music, food and more. Other popular festivals include the Texas Folklife Festival, which showcases the state's diverse cultural heritage, and Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of life and death that takes place in November.
  • San Antonio is the birthplace of chili con carne. This hearty dish made with meat and chili peppers is a staple in Texas cuisine and has been served in San Antonio since the 1800s. You can try some of the best chili in the city at restaurants like the Original Mexican Restaurant.
