ACROSS AMERICA — The deadline for Verizon customers to claim up to $100 as part of a $100 million class action settlement is fast approaching.

As Patch previously reported, eligible Verizon agreed to a proposed $100 million class action settlement after its customers sued, claiming the telecommunications giant charged its post-paid wireless service account holders a monthly administrative charge and/or administrative and telco recovery charge. The customers said it was unfair and not adequately disclosed.

Current and former Verizon wireless or data customers with service from Jan. 1, 2016, to Nov. 8, 2023, are eligible for a share of the settlement. People who submit valid claims will receive at least $15, and an additional $1 for each month they were a Verizon customer and paid the administration fee. Customers can receive up to $100 under the deal.

Verizon has denied — and continues to deny — it did anything wrong, and has denied the lawsuit has merit. The company has said it plans to continue charging the administration fee, but would change its customer agreement to include revised disclosures about that charge.

But customers and Verizon reached a proposed settlement to resolve the lawsuit.

Those who were notified of the settlement by email or mail are in the settlement class, according to Verizon’s records, and can file a claim for a payment from the settlement.

Affected customers must file a claim by April 15 to receive a payment. Those who choose to not submit a claim will receive no payment and forfeit their right to sue Verizon about issues in the lawsuit.

Alternatively, customers can previously have also opt outed of the settlement. Those customers will also not receive payment from the settlement, but may retain their right to sue the company about the issues outlined in the deal. Those who opted out had to have mailed a signed request for exclusion by Feb. 20.

And customers who wished to object or comment on the settlement had to have done so by Feb. 26. Those customers can still file a claim and receive a payment.
