Lajeunesse, married with two college-aged daughters, drove big trucks for 23 years.

But when Yellow Freight Corp. went bankrupt he had to find a new way to support his family. He had been the senior driver at Yellow's terminal in Williston, Vermont when the Kansas-based company suddenly closed its doors after nearly 100 years in business.

Lajeunesse went back to driving school to get an upgraded commercial-driver's license that would allow him to carry passengers.

Green Mountain Transit hired Lajeunesse and began training him as soon as he finished his extra schooling.

"Coming to work in the morning is different than it's ever been for me," he said. "Everyone actually says 'good morning' and 'thank you for being here.' It's a whole new way of life for me."

After Lajeunesse had a few days of driver training, his supervisor was so impressed with the how fast Lajeunesse picked up the routine he set him free to run the routes by himself.

Lajeunesse now runs every route that the bus company covers in northwestern Vermont.
