The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the recall after cucumbers tested positive for salmonella contamination.

The cucumbers were repacked into five-pound mesh bags bearing the logos of both Restaurant Depot and PennRose Farms. They were then shipped to Restaurant Depot distribution centers in five states.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled cucumbers as of Thursday, but the FDA is urging caution due to the potentially severe health risks associated with Salmonella contamination.

Do Not Eat Or Serve, Officials Warn

Health officials are urging consumers, restaurants, and retailers not to eat, serve, or sell these cucumbers. Anyone who has purchased the affected product should discard it immediately.

Restaurants and food service businesses that received the recalled cucumbers should destroy them and inform any customers who may have been served the product of the potential health risk, the FDA said.

The recall affects only this specific batch, and no other PennRose Farms products are involved, according to the company.

PennRose Farms says it has alerted all Restaurant Depot distribution centers that received the product and advised them to notify their customers about the recall.

Symptoms Of Salmonella: What To Watch For

Salmonella infections can be serious, and in some cases fatal, especially for young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

According to the FDA, common symptoms include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

While many healthy people recover without medical treatment, some cases become severe. The infection can spread from the intestines into the bloodstream, where it can lead to dangerous complications such as arterial infections (including infected aneurysms), endocarditis (an infection of the heart lining), and arthritis.

Anyone who has consumed the recalled cucumbers and is experiencing these symptoms should seek medical care immediately.

This recall is being conducted in coordination with the FDA.
